World Athletics Ultimate Championship: The new 'ultimate' athletics event

In September, Budapest will host an unprecedented athletics event: the World Athletics Ultimate Championship. Founded and financed by World Athletics, the competition takes place over three days (11–13 September 2026) with a total prize fund of $10 million – the highest in the sport's history. However, instead of medals, athletes compete for a single trophy. This event was born out of a calendar gap: 2026 has no Olympic Games or World Championships. World Athletics sees it as an opportunity to create a premium broadcast product, featuring a black infield, red carpet, and two star athletes: Noah Lyles (USA, sprints) and Armand Duplantis (Sweden, pole vault). Lyles will serve as MC, while Duplantis – the world record holder – is eyeing another record on the track. Yet the championship carries significant risks. Previously, Grand Slam Track – a promising competitor to traditional athletics – collapsed due to financial issues. World Athletics is bankrolling the event itself, meaning failure would directly impact the governing body's development and grassroots budgets. The format has many unknowns. There are no public qualifying standards or ranking mechanisms – athletes are invited. This risks controversy over fairness. Holding the event in September, at the tail end of the outdoor season, challenges athletes already deep into a long campaign. But pole vault allows a longer peak, making Duplantis the safest bet for a record-attempt headline. Notably, there are no medals. This shifts incentives: instead of symbolic honours and national bonuses, athletes only receive cash. That may boost record attempts but reduce tactical motivation. Lyles acting as MC – unusual for a current elite sprinter – signals entertainment over pure competition. Compared to other events, the Ultimate Championship occupies a unique tier: not a World Championships (no medals), not a Diamond League (no ranking points), but World Athletics' own property. With a planned biennial schedule, it's unclear which years future editions will fall in – if they clash with Olympics or Worlds, athlete participation will suffer. The BBC will broadcast live, a key commercial asset. Success depends on ad and rights revenue, not gate receipts. High revenue could reset the benchmark for event valuation; failure would hurt the sport's central funds. Lyles and Duplantis are used as narrative anchors: Lyles provides the stage personality, Duplantis the record-chase. But this risks distraction – especially for Lyles, facing media pressure before competing. Overall, the Ultimate Championship is a high-stakes gamble. Success could transform athletics' commercial landscape; failure would push losses back onto development programmes.
