Nguyen Tien Minh at 43: winning with intelligence, but succession remains an open question
| Cross-checked: VuaBong.vn
Nguyen Tien Minh opened his Vietnam Open 2026 campaign with a quiet but meaningful qualifier win over Nguyen Hoang Thai Son. At 43 years old and ranked 254th in the world, Minh is no longer the player who reached world number five, but he still knows how to read a match better than most younger opponents. Thai Son, a doubles-oriented player with speed and power, struggled when forced to cover the full singles court. Minh won by controlling the tempo, changing positions and exposing the technical gaps that come from playing mostly doubles.
The Vietnam Open 2026 is a BWF Super 100 event held from September 8 to 13, drawing more than 300 athletes from 27 countries and territories. For Vietnam, the tournament represents a chance to earn ranking points and gain international experience. But it also reveals deeper problems in Vietnamese men's singles badminton. Le Duc Phat, the player expected to carry the next generation, is struggling with knee and heel injuries and needed pain relief injections. Nguyen Hai Dang had already lost in qualifying. That leaves Minh, a 43-year-old veteran, as the most reliable name in the men's singles team.
Minh's victory should be respected, but not overstated. He still faces Zhe Ying Wu in the next round, and the gap in physical strength will be harder to overcome. His real contribution is not another title run. It is the example that a veteran can survive through intelligence, and the reminder that Vietnamese badminton needs more than inspiration. The system must invest in youth development, sports medicine and long-term planning. Otherwise, Minh will keep writing his own story while the next generation still waits for someone to show them the way.
