Aston Villa’s forced rebuild: PSR, a poor start and faith in Unai Emery

Aston Villa entered the 2026-27 season with a completely different look. After three opening Premier League rounds, the Birmingham club have not scored a single goal and have claimed only one point. This is not surprising given an unprecedented squad clearance in the club’s modern history: six players who started the Europa League final departed in the same transfer window. Under the pressure of the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR), Villa had almost no other choice. They sold Morgan Rogers to Chelsea for a British record fee. Lucas Digne moved to PSG. Ezri Konsa joined Arsenal. Emiliano Martinez also signed for Chelsea. Ollie Watkins headed to the Saudi Pro League. The team that conquered Europe is now only a memory. Former defender Gary Warnock, who has followed Villa for years, did not hide his concern. Speaking to the media, he said: “This is not an ideal situation. We would have preferred the regeneration to happen over several windows, but it was squeezed into one. However, looking at the new signings, this could turn out to be a blessing in disguise.” Indeed, while having to sell experienced pillars, Aston Villa also brought in a number of quality names. Young goalkeeper Zion Suzuki, 24, was described by Warnock as a particularly shrewd addition thanks to his excellent distribution. However, the lack of experience is evident. Villa have only one point and no goals after three games, raising questions about how this almost entirely new collective can function. Coach Unai Emery is seen as the right man to rebuild the club. Warnock stressed: “He is the right man to build that football club again and create that understanding of how to play.” But even the Spanish tactician needs time to connect the new pieces. A bright spot is the fixture list. Aston Villa are about to face Club Brugge away in the Champions League. This is an opportunity to test the team and gain rhythm, as well as a real test of their European ambition. If they keep performing poorly, pressure on Emery and his players will only grow. From a tactical point of view, losing six starters from the Europa League final means that all the top-level experience has gone. New arrivals such as Garnacho and Jackson have pace and technique, but they still need a conductor to lead the play. Gomes and Goretzka can bring solidity to midfield, while Wan-Bissaka will strengthen the right flank. The issue is cohesion. Warnock also admitted that, in the big picture, Aston Villa could be stronger in two or three years. But at this moment, fans must be patient. No team can lose so many key players at once without struggling. The question is whether Emery can shorten this blending process. Given what is happening, Aston Villa are paying for past financial mistakes. Heavy spending in previous windows has pushed them into the PSR vortex, forcing sales to balance the books. But seen positively, this could be the trigger for the club to build a new, stable and more sustainable spine under Emery. Aston Villa are at a major crossroads. They could collapse without stability, or they could rise strongly if the new signings settle quickly. The game against Club Brugge will be the first measuring stick.
