GTA 6: 80 hours of gameplay and the question about the future of esports
GTA 6 is expected to have an 80-hour story based on developer statements, but the game is single-player and not designed for esports. Source: Developer interview with Rob Nelson, 2023. | Cross-checked: VuaBong.vn
80 hours. That is the number that developer Rob Nelson of Rockstar revealed in a recent interview, stating that Grand Theft Auto VI may have the longest story in the company's history. But for a game built for a single-player experience, can that number change the landscape of esports? Since GTA V launched in 2026, Rockstar has witnessed the explosion of GTA Online – a multiplayer open world where races, missions, and even PvP battles occur daily. But GTA Online has never been considered a true esport. It lacks professional tournaments, a standardized ranking system, and publisher support for organized competitions. With GTA 6, the story is completely different. According to Rob Nelson, the development team has invested heavily in the story content, with an estimated playtime of up to 80 hours – one and a half times that of Red Dead Redemption 2 (about 50-60 hours). This shows that Rockstar still focuses on the single-player experience, rather than building a competitive platform. However, looking at the current context, when battle royale games like Fortnite and PUBG continuously dominate the esports rankings, Rockstar may be missing an opportunity. GTA Online once had a large player base, but lacked fair and transparent competitive mechanics. A serious competitive mode in GTA 6 could create a new wave, but so far, there is no sign of that. Looking back at history, Rockstar has never truly participated in esports. Games like Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption are designed to tell stories, not to compete. Even when the online mode is present, it remains a playground for entertainment, not an arena for sports. So, hoping that GTA 6 becomes an esports phenomenon is probably premature. Another perspective: can the success of GTA 6 indirectly boost esports? The answer is yes, but through a roundabout path. If the game sells millions of copies, the online player base will surge, leading to community-organized tournaments. However, to become a true esports, publisher support is needed – something Rockstar seems not ready for. 80 hours is an impressive number, but in the esports world, people don't measure by hours, but by competition and fairness. GTA 6 may be an entertainment masterpiece, but to become a competitive esports arena, it needs more than that. Perhaps after finishing the 80-hour story, fans will create their own tournaments. But that is a story of the community, not of Rockstar.
